Opening the Window of Particle Physics Research to High School Students
Michael Kobel and Uta Bilow
Institut für Kern- und Teilchenphysik, TU Dresden

July 10, 2014, 1 p.m.

Particle physics is one of the rapidly emerging fields of science. The discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC in summer 2012 led to a huge media echo and large public interest. Two outreach programmes – International Masterclasses and Netzwerk Teilchenwelt - give high school students the possibility to participate in this cutting-edge research and to work with real data collected by the experiments at the LHC. Both programmes are led by TU Dresden. International Masterclasses attract more than 10.000 worldwide per year, the German programme Netzwerk Teilchenwelt offers every year a multi-step programme for 5.000 participants in Germany, ranging from Masterclasses at schools to workshops at CERN.
