Quanteninformation mit quantenoptischen systeme
Ignacio Cirac

Nov. 17, 2003, 4:15 p.m.

In the field of quantum information, basic principles of Quantum Mechanics are used to transmit and process information in a very efficient way. In particular, if we would be able to control and manipulate microscopic systems at the quantum level, we could build a quantum computer which would outperform any computer that we have nowadays.
In this talk I will report on the most recent advances in the field of quantum information, making a strong emphasis on the experimental progress with atoms and ions. I will explain the most important achievements with these systems during the last two years, as well as the new challenges which have to be reached in order to control and manipulate them at the quantum mechanical level.
