In October 2022, SIGN, the "Italian Scientists in Germany Network", was launched at the Italian Embassy in Berlin. The Italian Ambassador to Germany, H. E. Armando Varricchio, signed the founding charter of the association, which aims to support the research of Italian scientists in Germany and to highlight their excellence in many fields, in front of around 120 guests at a festive event.
Prof. Gianaurelio Cuniberti from TU Dresden is the founding director of the association. He emphasizes that in addition to scientific cooperation, SIGN will promote the exchange of ideas and thoughts between the two countries. "SIGN will also be a think tank that will facilitate the mutual transfer of experiences and practices and help stimulate a brain gain in favor of both research systems," Cuniberti said. "Scientific cooperation with Italy is one of the central pillars of our internationalization strategy," affirms Prof. Ronald Tetzlaff, CTIO of TU Dresden. "Therefore, I am particularly pleased that such an important initiative is significantly supported and led by our university." In the opening speeches of the ambassador and the president of the Italian Research Council (CNR), Prof. Maria Chiara Carrozza, the importance of a network of Italian scientists in Germany was emphasized. This is also evident from the figures on Italian researchers in Germany: 1,100 are working at non-university research institutes, more than 3,800 are working at German universities, and 300 of them as university professors. In addition to agreements between the CNR and German research organizations, there are more than 750 partnership agreements between Italian universities and German partners at the institutional level.
