Prof. Gianaurelio Cuniberti receives Premio Mercurio Special Prize 2021

Excellent research and promotion of international exchange:

On October 01, 2021, the German-Italian business association MERCURIO awarded the Premio Mercurio special prize in the category of personalities to Prof. Dr. Gianaurelio Cuniberti, who heads the Chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology at TU Dresden. MERCURIO thus honors his excellent scientific achievements in the field of nanotechnology and the promotion of academic and economic cooperation in Europe. The German-Italian Business Prize Premio Mercurio has been awarded since 1999 based on the selection by a high-ranking jury for significant initiatives in the field of exchange between Germany and Italy. The award ceremony took place at the Italian Embassy in Berlin in the presence of Italian Ambassador Armando Varricchio, who highlighted the close ties between the two countries.
"I am very honored by the award, as it recognizes my efforts to build bridges between the country of birth and my home of choice," said Prof. Cuniberti. "I thank MERCURIO e. V. and the jury for the great recognition of my activities," Cuniberti continued.
Commenting on this year's award ceremony, MERCURIO President Eckart Petzold emphasized the role of the prize: "The mission of the Mercurio Prize is to underline the strong historical link between Italy and Germany. This year's award ceremony has a special significance: it shows that the relationship between the two countries has not only withstood the harsh test of the pandemic, but has also helped to strengthen the mechanisms of cooperation within the European Union and create growth at the European level."

Background on the award and the person:
The German-Italian Business Prize Premio Mercurio has been awarded since 1999 for significant initiatives in the field of economic and cultural exchange between Germany and Italy. The jury decides according to a total of seven criteria, such as: job creation/security, growth, sustainability and know-how transfer. The award ceremony will take place in the company of German and Italian entrepreneurs, important public figures from both countries and representatives of the press during a ceremony.

MERCURIO e. V. is a nationwide association with headquarters in Düsseldorf. Founded in 1988 from the Italian Agency for Foreign Trade (Istituto nazionale per il Commercio Estero, ICE) and the Italian Consulate General in Cologne, the association is under the patronage of the Ambassador of the Italian Republic. MERCURIO offers a unique networking platform for the exchange of experience and information to all institutions and companies interested in German-Italian economic relations as well as their executives.

Prof. Dr. Cuniberti was born in Genoa (Italy) and has held the professorship of Materials Science and Nanotechnology at TU Dresden since 2007. He is the founder of the Dresden Center for Computational Materials Science (DCMS) and its scientific director since 2013. Prof. Dr. Cuniberti is also an honorary professor at POSTECH - Pohang University of Science and Technology (Korea), University of Alabama (USA) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China). In 2018, he became a professor of transCampus, the privileged partnership between TU Dresden and King's College London. Prof. Dr. Cuniberti is an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) and the Academia Europaea, the two most prestigious scientific academies in Europe. Prof. Dr. Gianaurelio Cuniberti has made fundamental contributions to various scientific fields of nanotechnology and materials science, which are of great importance, for example, for the realization of the digitization of the sense of smell. His research activity is internationally recognized through more than 430 scientific articles and his applications have an impact on the commercialization of patents and the creation of high-tech start-ups.
