The Academy of Sciences of Umbria is divided into two classes: that of Natural, Life, and Applied Sciences and that of Human Sciences, each with a limited number of members. It is legally configured as an Italian cultural association, with a Statute similar to that of other Academies of Sciences also present for centuries in many major Italian cities and often with very prestigious locations. The activity has been strongly supported by the Municipality of Perugia, which offered hospitality at the Library of S. Matteo degli Armeni in Monteripido.

The academies, even though they are present in cities that are almost always the seat of important universities, are in general independent from the universities, in the sense that the activity of the latter is mainly dedicated to training and research, while the academies are mainly dedicated to scientific divulgation, organizing conferences, conventions and meetings, even interdisciplinary ones.

The Statute of the Academy is similar to the one of the other existing Academies and therefore the Members are limited in number and they join by co-optation. At the age of 85, the Members become Emeriti.
